Description

Zerbst and Tsarskoe Selo are two important places in the life of the Russian Empress Catherine II: in the first she lived in her youth, in the second she lived the rules and rested. 26 images of Tsarskoye Selo located near St. Petersburg will be brought to Catherine's homeland in Zerbst Castle, divided into 13 pairs. Next to each story from the past, captured in photographs of paintings and engravings of the XVIII-XIX centuries, will be located a modern photograph of the XXI century of the same place: landscape compositions, architectural objects, viewpoints.

Among the historical images are the engravings of the Hermitage in Tsarskoye Selo (1759) by Alexei Grekov and Mikhail Makhayev, View of the Cameron Gallery in Tsarskoye Selo (1793) by Johann Christophe Mayr, gouache by Alexander Zakharov “View of an island on a large lake in Tsarskoe Selo” (after 1771).

Visitors to the photo exhibition will travel in a “time machine”: they will see the most beautiful places of Tsarskoye Selo, ancient views of the former royal residence, will have the opportunity to compare the neighborhood of the past with the present. Here everyone will be able to comprehend the evolution of the Tsarskoye Selo residence development and feel how its appearance has changed after two and a half centuries.
